Ssss’hilar

by Ellie McHale

Sometimes, all you need in life is to laugh maniacally by yourself in your car while waiting for your next class to begin. And, that’s what I have been doing the last week.

After eight months without updating the feed (well actually, I think I unsubscribed), I loaded up my iTunes with almost 100 episodes of Ten Minute Podcast. If you haven’t listened to any of it or even heard of it, I suggest you hop on the bandwagon immediately. It is exactly what it sounds like: a ten minute podcast. Three comedians, ten minutes, HILARITY! Everyone knows who Will Sasso, Chris D’Elia, and Bryan Callen are, and if ya’don’t, ya’sssss’sad. Yes, it’s three dudes being dudes. But, it really is the most fundamental ten minutes of laugh out loud you can have. And, if their humour isn’t for you, so be it. I’m glad I waited eight months to reload. Ten minutes twice a week isn’t enough. I need an hour of it every damn day. Seriously, listen to one, maybe five. If you’re entertained, subscribe and listen to ALL of them. I’ll warn you, it’s been around for just over two years, so you have a lot of catching up to do.

That’s really all I wanted to tell you. Just like the @TenMinPod, this is it. Short and sweet…

Now get listening, y’all.

Still Our Hands Match

by Ellie McHale

Let’s keep up the songs of heartbreak trend here. I’m only just discovering Daughter, a band from North London that has been around since 2010. At the end of April, they released their first full length album “If You Leave” after releasing 3 EPs in 2010 & 2011.

It’s times like this that I wish I was back in London. The music scene is much more on point & forward thinking. For example, I was already sick of Coldplay by the time ‘Yellow’ got airplay stateside. Sure, Coldplay is an English band, but it still would have gotten tons of PR & airplay in the UK if it were a South African band. Just sayin’. Many artists make the trek out to England to start their music career because of the borderline aggressive music scene. Surely, it’s changed in the last decade, as the music industry as a whole has. However, there seems to be a larger want and need for excellent, original musical talent.

I caved last night & purchased Daughter’s album. The band is a trio: Elena Tonra on vocals (and the founder of the band, as it started as a solo project), Igor Haefeli on guitar, and Remi Aguilella on drums. Elena has a haunting voice. It is simple, pure, and magical. Her voice reminds me of Rachel Yamagata, but in a more emotional manner. In fact, Elena’s voice is richer. The songs, just like Elena’s voice, are haunting. They are able to speak to pretty much anyone. The melodies, the lyrics, and the pace, they hit upon our ability to pull out memories & past feelings.

We should be supporting musicians, especially female musicians. So, I urge you to go out and purchase some of Daughter’s work. Even if you purchase a $4.00 EP from iTunes, that’s still supporting the arts & women making an honest paycheck… And, to tempt you, I’ll leave you with a song from “If You Leave”:

Giveaway Winner!

by Ellie McHale

Only one person entered the giveaway, so she is officially the winner of TWO(!!!) $25 iTunes gift cards. Sarah, my dear, it’s all you honey! We’ll have to hang out soon so I can get them to you. Let’s plan something with Kate!

There is definitely a lesson to be learned here. My offering, while awesome, was something perhaps not appealing to everyone. Fair enough! Next giveaway will be something rad. And, I am always open to suggestions. Please, do share what you’d enjoy winning (within reason). I’m thinking concert tickets, ear/head phones, books, etc..

Thanks A Million (Win iTunes Credit)

by Ellie McHale

The plan was to have 1,000 views by 11.59pm PST on December 31st, 2012 and I was going to do a giveaway. But, that was an unreasonable goal. So, I settled for 500 views by the same time. Today, right now, DJ Toaster Biscuit is at 501 views! YAY!

So, this means I can get started on my first giveaway! Initially, I chose to give one lucky winner a $50 iTunes gift card. But, I’d love to give two people the chance to win. So, I am going to chose (randomly) two people to receive a $25 iTunes gift card each.

Hear are the entry steps & rules:
1. Leave a comment here with either a suggestion for a post or your top five favorite songs;
2. [Optional step] Follow DJ Toaster Biscuit on Twitter;
3. [Optional step] Like DJ Toaster Biscuit on FaceBook;
4. Please do this by 11.59pm PST on December 31st, 2012.

Please make sure that when you leave a comment, you leave your name & email if you don’t have a WordPress account. I need to be able to contact you if you win. Winners will be announced by 11pm PST January 2nd, 2013.

Once again, thank you for all of your views and support! Totally appreciate it!

iTunes Radio is a Blessing

by Ellie McHale

Tonight, I’m slowly cleaning my room, and can only get motivated by having some sort of soundtrack to get my brain going. I’m not in the mood to listen to any of the usuals, or any of the music I just put into my library. The podcasts waiting to be listened to aren’t appealing. Talk radio doesn’t quite cut it…

This leaves me with picking a radio station through iTunes at random. I went through the jazz stations, but wasn’t inspired. I listened to the Savannah College of Art & Design station for awhile, but the punk music wasn’t what I was looking for (and, I love punk). So, I checked out the Ambient stations. I think I’ve found my new favorite background music option. If you have (US) iTunes & some sort of internet connection, I suggest you check it out. It’s called “DI – Chillout” and is described as offering “ambient psy chillout” music. If you are into electronic music or even general ambient music, this is a great option. It definitely allows me to become almost trance-like, a state I need to be in to organize and clean my room.

Here is a sample of what I’m listening to right now:

Now, I gotta get back to cleaning.
