Pride Week: Friday

by Ellie McHale

Bloody well finally! It’s the middle of 2015 and marriage between consenting adults, regardless of their gender and sex, is legal. It took long enough! What a perfect time for this to happen.

Of course I have to work both Saturday & Sunday, so cannot revel in the streets of San Francisco with everyone. But, there will be more than enough people celebrating! What a joyous occasion! [I’m really hoping no one screws it up and wreaks havoc in the streets. Everyone, whilst having fun, please be safe!]

Tonight, I’m sharing with you one of my favorite albums: Bitter, by Me’Shell Ndegeocello. Please go and buy it. It’s money well spent. Seriously!

Seriously, folks. What a momentous day. Celebrate in the best way possible. Love! Be love! Share love! Give love!!!

Delayed Reaction

by Ellie McHale

Ooops, it’s been just over two months since my last post. However, I believe I had a preemptive warning this might happen! School has been quite time consuming and I seem to spend a lot of my non-school time at work.

Right now, my body seems to be feeling a bit funny. I (among others) have come to the conclusion I might have a bad case of dermatitis only aggravated by too much forced heat at work. On top of that, I feel a little bit of a cold lingering. This means that my focus is out of sync. I’m trying to write modified case briefs for an assignment that is due next week, but I lose my train of thought every couple of sentences. Which is why I am here, writing this – an attempt to reign in what little focus I have and keep it within a fairly close radius.

So, let me share my ultimate musical obsession: The National’s “I Need My Girl” Enjoy!

Albums That Stick

by Ellie McHale

For those of us who are deeply involved in our musical tastes, it is safe to say we have a handful of albums that we are fantastically, heartbreakingly in love with. They are albums that we can listen to from top to bottom any time, any day, any mood, and we can probably listen to it ten times in a row.

The earth quaking, life changing albums for me are Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, Portishead by Portishead, Revolver by The Beatles, Los Angeles by Flying Lotus, The Bends by Radiohead, A Love Supreme by John Coltrane, Apostrophe by Frank Zappa, Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion by The Black Crowes, Version 2.0 by Garbage, The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground, The Joshua Tree by U2, Levelling The Land by The Levellers, and Regular Urban Survivors by Terrorvision.

These are all albums that have had major rotation in the soundtrack of my life, punctuated with other artists & albums*. Some were ingrained into my mind at a very young age, due to my parents’ hip musical taste. Some appeared at pivotal times later in my life. I can lose myself in these albums, able to let go of any distractions. For me, they are full of some sort of passion (individualized or holistically) & creativity, and have been able to speak to emotions I have experienced.

*(Manic Street Preachers, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty, Garbage, Fleetwood Mac, and Ani Di Franco being among other major musical players in my life.)

In upcoming blogs, I plan to share with you the individual experience of each album I have mentioned. I’ll do my best to recall my first memory of the album, as well as discuss the songs as individual pieces & part of the whole. I am very excited to embark on this project, as I have wanted to do this for years.
